NDR, Dude, thanks for posting. The story of John Titor occupied me for much of this morning, but I’m obliging him by remaining skeptical. Still, imagining civil war erupting here in the US doesn’t seem that far-fetched these days. Yesterday, on our way to the final Smitty Tour event, my stepbrother and I talked about the possibilities of this country moving towards federalism, where the states were self-governing for the most part. The specific point he made is that states like California and New York that are wealthy and contribute the most tax dollars will eventually be unwilling to pay for policies that they don’t support. I think this would certainly be an improvement for both sides. You could sort of “pick your political climate” by choosing to live in a state that best represents your views. For instance, stem cell research in California could flourish even while Texas was executing doctors that performed abortions. (Sadly, I’m not exaggerating the Texas thing.) I don’t consider this view to be all that optimistic, but when you honestly analyze the great political divide this election highlighted, I wonder if perhaps even federalism would be a pleasant resolution. I’m not going to John Titor-ize everything from now on, but on November 3rd I lost a good deal of the optimism I had the day before.
For anyone interested, I somehow finished 3rd overall in the Smitty Tour.. but mostly because our handicaps are well-calculated by the comissioner.
Baghdad Burning has been updated… and she’s understandably distraught. I feel like we’re advocating “an eye for an eye”, even to the point of kicking the “enemy” while they’re down, simply by showing such incredible support for Bush. I think she understands that most blue states are against the war, but the problem is that the red states won, and most Iraqis probably aren’t nearly as globally-aware as she is. To put it in terms a Bush supporter could understand, we’re like a pro wrestling tag team equipped with steel chairs ganging up on one of their “babes” outside the ring.
Here’s a map of each county showing their votes by color… the purple America.
Further supporting the great political divide, San Francisco residents talk about The United States of Canada and abstaining from visiting the red states. Hey man, I totally sympathize.
On Sunday morning, a 25-year old Georgia man killed himself at ground zero, purportedly because of the election result.
This is no doubt extremely inaccurate, but here’s a site attempting to correlate the average IQ of each state to the candidate they chose. (Big surprise… pro-Kerry states have smarter residents.) I really shouldn’t be perpetuating this kind of crap, so I’m hereby removing BuzzFlash.com from my list of links. I’m sick of the speculatory, conspiracy-laden, pointless drivel they spew forth.
If you can think of a possible terrorist attack, Rob over at Cockeyed.com would like to know about it. His belief is that by predicting these kinds of attacks, we acknowledge our security failures and can at least work toward avoiding further disasters. I also hold this belief. Right now I can’t come up with anything though.
NASA is studying the brain of the autistic man Rain Man was based upon. Personally I was fascinated enough just by hearing he memorizes phone books!
The Cleveland Browns suck!!! (But I’ll watch them every week and cry like a baby.) We lost 27-13 against the Baltimore Ravens.
So last night I had to take a friend of mine up to Michigan. As we were driving, we noticed that there was a strange green glow to the north. We started talking about the Northern Lights but figured there was no way in hell that’s what it was. As I was driving back, I kept looking over and I decided that it had to be the Aurora Borealis. I almost forgot about that until this morning when I realized I was right! Apparently the clear, dry skies and increased sunspot activity caused them to be visible all the way down here.
Alright, somebody explain why a fucking LION is roaming around the greater Columbus area. I want answers. Siegfried, I’m looking at you.

Amen: We’ve been duped, again.
Can we perhaps now pause thoughtfully before burying our heads in the shit for another three and a half years, so that next time we won’t be crying like helpless diaperbabies when Jeb (or George P. or Anheuser or whichever Bush is smoothly manufactured to succeed the current one) swindles another ‘election’ from beneath the effete, upturned nose of another useless neoliberal Democrat candidate?
A suggestion, for point of reference: 59,651,290 eligible voters supposedly re-elected this subhuman, scrotalplasmic barbarian. By my count, that’s 235,042,281 living Americans — about 79.758% of the population — that want nothing to do with this lesser ape or his delerious, mindnumbing hangover-christian ways.
For those with any semblance of faith left in our fellow humans, let’s use this as a jumping-off point.
For the rest of us, there’s John Titor.

A-men!! Speak the truth brother not let it go un-said that Kerry was hand picked by the bushes to run a good race and then accept defeat so quickly. Remember Yale.
Does anyone out there belief that you can change a society peacefully?
Let’s hope so.

Alright, it’s obvious that the Democratic party has lost much of its strength. Let me be the first to blame John Kerry. Yes, I was hopeful he’d win the election, simply because the alternative was unthinkably distressing. But I wouldn’t have refrained from criticizing him for his campaign performance. Firstly, I don’t think he criticized Bush effectively enough. There were issues he never touched on, and I’m not talking about National Guard service or any irrelevant bullshit like that. I’m talking about 9/11 failures, Abu Ghraib, Guantanamo, and asking him to explain why his rationale behind going into Iraq changed more than 20 times. He could have hit harder, and in places that it would count, too. Not to mention Kerry should have offered clear differences between Bush. Though his linguistic competency framed Bush as a moron, the content of his rhetoric was vague and (dare I succumb to superficial concerns) .. boring! If I were an undecided voter going into the debates, and assuming I didn’t understand what a miserable failure GW has been, I could imagine that hearing Bush’s dumbed-down yet clear convictions would have swayed me in his direction. Whenever Kerry spoke about his “plans” they were so ambiguous and idealistic that I found myself saying “well, of course you’d plan to do that”. Perhaps this election called for a new kind of Democrat as opposed to the optimistic centrist that Kerry appeared to be. We needed an outspoken, confident and uncomprimising liberal. I know, I know… supposedly Democrats abandoned so many folks due to issues of morality, but personally I believe we lost a lot of votes due to a lack of clarity regarding the party’s platform.
Let me just say that under no circumstance will I tolerate the exaltation of Hillary Clinton, even after these miserable election results. I’ve already seen it suggested that she run for President next time around. 2008 is not Hillary’s time, and the last thing we need is another moderate, especially after four more years of Enron/Haliburton.. er, Bush/Cheney. I have absolutely no problem putting a woman in power, in fact, I bet it would benefit America greatly. However, Hillary is not that person, and nor should we begin grooming her for something so far off.
How about a whole new situation? Perhaps America can sort out its differences in a way never before proposed:

Personally, I don’t see why not. Really. (Though it’s too bad Cleveland is so polarized from the rest of Ohio, coz I’m fond of this city.)
Iraqis are challenging Bush to be a better leader than Saddam was. “Bush talks about freedom and democracy but all the Americans have brought is death and destruction. Where’s our electricity? Where’s our oil money?” asked Abu Ghazwan, a greengrocer in southwestern Baghdad. Those are damn good questions, Abu.
Though nothing’s happened yet, I’m glad the stem cell research issue passed in California. They’re making plans for facilities and trying to ensure that their opportunity is not squandered.
And now, for a series of idiotic performances in the news.
1. A man jumped into a lion cage to convert them to Christianity.
2. A naked man climbed into the wheel well of a plane at LAX after stripping in protest of being denied a ticket. He was trying to use a credit card recipt to purchase the ticket.
3. I have no idea when this happened or where, but a moronic airline cleaning crew started the plane’s engines and crashed it into the concourse. Plenty of pictures.
This is funny… 20 reasons why you shouldn’t post your picture on the internet. (I usually don’t, but this week I did, twice. So, go easy on me.)

Update: Without provisional ballots counted, the spread in Ohio has Bush ahead by 130,650 votes. Approximately 135,000 to 150,000 provisional ballots were issued. So, if you’re still gunnin’ for Kerry, it’s a long shot, but given the Republicans’ attempts at disenfranchising Democrat voters, perhaps the majority of those ballots would be in Kerry’s favor. I heard on NPR this morning that it could take 11 days to count and validate all the provisional ballots.
Also, I figured out why FOX News’ reports are skewed. They’ve already given Bush Ohio, and refused to give Wisconsin to Kerry. MSNBC’s results are also messed up.

America, what have you done?! It appears that the “redneck agenda” is the prevailing stance this election year. Somehow, between 9/11 and today, being close-minded and xenophobic became fashionable. The message we’ve just sent to the world (whether we intended to send it or not) is that we support Bush’s regime and their actions. That means we support his decision to go to war in Iraq, despite the fact that we’re the only country in the world with a sizable population who believes it was the right move. A large majority of the world has got to be astonished with our supremacist, isolationist stance. For those of us objective enough to realize how globally disconnected we’ve become, it’s easy to see how effective the bigoted, conservative media has been. Sure I can’t blame FOX News for everything, but when far-right wackjobs like Ann Coulter, Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly appear to be “mainstream” because of the vast potential audience they have access to, their views can come slowly creeping into the minds of the public. If you don’t have a news channel preference, you might occasionally stop on FOX News and have a listen. Hearing the banter between a neocon and a Republican they’re calling a “liberal” would give you a false impression of exactly where the middle of the road is. Still, a fundamental shift in thinking like this had to have been brewing in the minds of a lot of Americans already. The fact that over 50% of America supports a deceptive, conniving administration is abhorrent enough, but the opposition of same-sex marriage elevates my disdain for the prejudiced citizens of this country to a whole new level. In every state that voted on Issue 1, the result was astonishingly clear.
10 states in all.. some winning by a 3-to-2 or 3-to-1 margin. (Mississippi was in favor of the ban by a 6-to-1 ratio.) This is the first time that discrimination of any kind has been legislated into our very foundation. This is Bush saying “It’s okay people, let your hate out!” and the people eagerly showing their true nature. I have to say, despite my prior awareness of the presence of anti-gay zealots in this country, I remain bewildered by the results of this initiative. Even my own state banned same-sex marriages; perhaps in the most defiant manner of all the states proposing the ban.

I’d like to point out that, right now, FOX News is reporting that Bush has 269 electoral votes and Kerry has 242. Every single other news organization is reporting the race is 254 to 252. I could see why a biased news organization is giving Bush Ohio’s electoral votes, but you can’t remove 10 of Kerry’s! What the fuck?!
On a local level, the school levy I was helping to support failed… 55% to 44%. Cleveland Public Schools’ days are numbered. This levy would have only gotten them from $100 million in the hole back up to about $32 million in the hole. If it had passed, they still wouldn’t have gotten back on track, but NOW, who knows if they ever will. Over 50 percent of Cleveland’s kids are living in poverty, and now their schools are so under-funded that classes are overflowing and out-of-date textbooks will continue to be used. This is certainly a financial disaster, and will most likely get much worse as time goes on.
The solitary positive outcome in this election was that Dennis Kucinich won re-election in the House by a large margin. That was no surprise though.
In honor of the conservative triumph that is this year’s election, the National Museum of the Middle Class has just opened. We had a good run.
I might have more to write later today, but I’m still in shock. I want the world to know that not all of us support this freakin’ maniac and his crusade, and that some of us were rather surprised to learn just how many people DO support him.

Well, here we are folks. Election Day. I cast my vote at approximately 7:55am this morning, with my cheat sheets in hand. I had one from a woman I work with who’s an attorney, and one I got in the mail for the Democratic party. I must say, the turnout was already looking good, and my father said where he votes everyone agreed this was the biggest turnout they’d ever seen. Of course it’s going to be a long 24 hours for everyone. We can only hope no major electronic malfunctions or ballot disasters occur. As much as I wish I could sway Kerry’s opinion on a lot of issues, I sincerely hope he easily wins. I just want video of the expression on GW’s face as he learns he lost. I know we won’t be that fortunate, but perhaps in his congratulatory speech he’ll make an ass out of himself. (As though he didn’t do that long ago.)
Baghdad Burning has been updated.
Alright, I’ve come to a conclusion about this Osama tape, after reading the full transcript. The BBC was correct when they said he was aware that neither Bush nor Kerry would change the situation in Iraq. What he said after that was “Your security is in your own hands. And every state that doesn’t play with our security has automatically guaranteed its own security.” So clearly he meant states as in countries not states as in US states. Earlier in the speech he explained that, for example, he wouldn’t just attack Sweden or something. There’s still evidence that he has a serious vendetta against Bush though, so I think at least Kerry would have a chance to make a different impression on them. I know what you’re thinking (especially if you watch FOX News a lot)… who cares about the impression we make on terrorists?! Kill them all!! Well, certainly we don’t want to appease them or cater to their demands, but if we can refrain from the kind of violent attacks that fuel their hatred of us, then perhaps we can deter them from attacking us. That doesn’t mean backing down and letting them organize to overthrow us or collapse our economy… that means engaging in the kind of foreign policy and military practices that don’t cause a worldwide uproar. They’re not the only people abroad that are angry with us… it just so happens they’ve been first-hand witnesses to the kind of needless conquests the US has embarked upon in the past. I don’t feel sorry for them, and if they condemn our violence I don’t understand the use of extreme violence in retaliation… but it isn’t as though the US has been giving the impression that we’re a peace-loving country, especially in Arab nations.
Damn, even China thinks Bush is trying to take over the world! Considering they’re taunting Taiwan and not showing much respect to Hong Kong, we must be pretty aggressive in their eyes.
It’s always nice to see Olive Oil getting some props from the FDA. Congratulations, Mr. Oil… you are now officially healthy.
Ahhh Cleveland. A woman tried to rob an Aldi’s (supermarket) wearing a gorilla mask. I guess she was really getting into the spirit of Halloween. Except for the whole robbery thing.

Monday November 1, 2004

What a confusing weekend. I thought we were recording on Saturday, and found out we weren’t. Then I thought the concert I’d been planning to go to was also Saturday… it was Sunday. So, the above picture is Deerhoof, which was last night. They really slammed, and people were attentive as hell. After their one-song encore, nobody was leaving… we were all still cheering when they came out and said “really, thanks a lot, but that’s all we know!” I thought that was cool of them. Next time they’ll have Freebird ready.

Oh yeah, and on Friday I got dressed up as Cornel West. This picture sucks though… I had the wig teased up much higher and it looked better than that. At the party later on, I started to get light-headed and feel like I was going to blow chunks. Though I think my empty stomach played a bigger role, I learned it’s not a good idea to suffocate your head with a wig while wearing a full suit and glasses that aren’t your prescription. Needless to say I retreated to my couch soon after that.
I’ve heard a couple of conflicting points of view about the new Osama tape. Some say it claims that states voting for Kerry will be spared from attacks, while others say he’s aware that no matter who’s elected, the situation in Iraq will not change. Personally, I have an easier time subscribing to the latter theory, simply because in this current election, people are trying to get votes any way they can… and I don’t see why that doesn’t include skewing Osama’s statements to scare folks into voting for Kerry.
One historically accurate election forecast, the outcome of the last Washington Redskins game before the election, has shown that Kerry will win. I posted a story about this not too long ago, but to refresh your memory, if the Redskins win, so does the incumbant, and if they lose, the opponent wins. The Skins lost 28 to 14 against the Green Bay Packers. Well, if the Bush regime retains power after tomorrow, at least we can’t blame the Packers. They did their part.
I just thought this was weird: Mozart’s skull has been exhumed in order to determine the validity of an old legend. Supposedly, Mozart’s gravedigger stole his skull for some reason.
